Post-Construction Basement Waterproofing Solutions
Defined Tag: Basement Waterproofing. Basements are located in confined areas below the house. As such, they are considered as very delicate portions of the building. Basements, after all, are the areas formed by the foundations of the house. The structural integrity of the latter will have to depend on the structural integrity of the basement. In many cases, water weakens the foundations of many structures. And basements are not spared. Basements, given their location as well as their damp conditions, are pretty conducive for water buildup. This should be prevented through some basement waterproofing menthods. The best time to waterproof your basement is during the construction period. The basement should be constructed in such a way that the angle will force the water to flow away from the basement. This will prevent the unwanted buildup of water during the rainy season, or as caused by a faulty drainage system. Post-construction basement waterproofing, however, is often required. Most homes, after all, are bought from original owners. Reconstructing the basement is virtually impossible without reconstructing the entire building, since the basement embodies the foundation for the house. Post-construction basement waterproofing consists of the application of particular materials on the surface of the floor, the walls, and the roofing of the basement. These materials help prevent leakages from the plumbing systems or from accumulated water. Also, these materials help prevent the buildup of moisture within the panels. Surfaces made from concrete, for example, are very susceptible to moisture buildup. Concrete, though very study, is very porous as well. Given the damp conditions in most basements, moisture can form quite quickly in the various surfaces of the basement. Post-construction basement waterproofing materials are composed of a group of supplements called membranes. Membranes, literally speaking, refer to soft layers of materials that will eventually harden with time or with the application of heat. These membranes will serve as protectors for the surfaces, as well as sealants. They will be responsible for curtailing the buildup of moistures in between pores, and the leakage of water from outside of the basement. Waterproofing paint is the most convenient membrane to use. All you have to do is to brush it on the surface you want to fix. Semi-permeable sealants are also good alternatives, but you need to get your hands dirty to mold and flatten them on the surface. Additionally, you'd also need a sharp angle upon which the sealants will cling. Spray-on waterproofing solutions are also available. All you have to do is to, well, spray them on the surface for an easier time. This solution, however, is criticized as many people question the hardiness of the same.
